Power of DDoS attacks shows spectacular growth

Leiden, April 17th, 2013 – The amount of traffic generated by botnets in the average DDoS attack has multiplied by a factor of 8 in the last three months. In the fourth quarter of 2012 the average DDoS attack generated 5.9 Gbps of traffic. In the first quarter of 2013 the power increased to 48.25 Gbps, with certain attacks registering up to 130 Gbps. The duration of the attacks also increased from an average of 32.2 hours in the fourth quarter of 2012, to 34.5 hours in the first quarter of 2013.

The growth is especially remarkable because when comparing the figures of 2012 there is not much difference between the first and fourth quarters. This past month a new record was set: 160 Gbps. The predictions is that the barrier of 200 Gbps will be broken in Jun

Servers deployed instead of pc's

The seriousness of the attacks lies in the new way in which hackers organize DDoS attacks. Instead of using thousands of pc’s of non suspecting citizens, hackers increasingly direct their attention to web servers that have a much larger bandwidth and are less monitored for unusual activity.
